Newnan High’s Senior Stephen Hamlin wants to become a special education teacher to change kid’s lives. This passion comes from Hamlin’s 11th-grade teacher changing his life for the better.

Hamlin wants to go to the University of West Georgia to complete the teaching program offered there. Hamlin wants to teach children with special needs.

“I feel like I could change kid’s lives for the better”, says Hamlin.

Hamlin has been through rough times, which has set him up for his drive to giving back to the community. He wants to give kids the help they need, just like his 11th-grade teacher helped him.

“My eleventh-grade literature teacher helped change my life because she got me the help I needed for my depression and suicidal thoughts. If it weren’t for her, I don’t know where I’d be right now. It may have taken me getting stuck in a mental hospital but it was what I needed.”

Hamlin also suffers from epilepsy, a neurological disorder that causes seizures. Although this might set Hamlin back, he is still set on being a teacher. In five years, Hamlin would like to be finished his teaching courses and going into the field.

“I’m 18 and I don’t have my learner’s,” says Hamlin. “Once, I was folding towels one minute and the next, EMT were walking into my house.”

Hamlin also enjoys activities such as volunteering at his church and gaming. Hamlin’s gaming helps to calm his mind when he is put into the virtual world. However, Hamlin’s drive for teaching hasn’t always been in the family.

“There are four generations worth of amateur radio operators and I’m the fourth generation. Also, my brother is trying to become a chef”, says Hamlin.

Hamlin has many plans for himself in the future, but changing people’s lives in on the top of the list.

Hamlin says,“Changing lives for the better is very important to me”.
