It’s the showdown between the renovated Chromebooks and the obsolete textbooks, but it appears that within Coweta County, Chromebooks have won.  Earlier this month the Coweta County School Board approved spending almost $5 million to purchase more than 17,000 Google Chromebooks for students in third through 12th grades.

Many have embraced the idea of carrying a five pound Chromebook everywhere because it is not only useful, but fashionable too. Others argue against the idea because previously their school life was only textbooks.

According to John Vaughn, the Instructional Technology Coach at Coweta County’s School System, “(It costs) $70 or $80 each individual textbook, but you have to buy millions of dollars worth.”

The Chromebooks Coweta County is purchasing cost $279.42 according to The Newnan Times-Herald’s report.

Most teachers have a preference  for Chromebooks because they get better updated textbook information and the updates are easier.

Even team members like Arnall MS 8th grader unter Stanton said, “They (Chromebooks) are easier to use and less complex and they give you a modern feel.” He also added that the idea that team members can have too much information may not be true with internet connected Chromebooks.

CEC’s Educational Technology Support Specialist Terry Threadgill  is glad to have Chromebooks because he “…like(s) how easy it is to take care of them.” He added, “In the old computer lab I had to fix the desktops, but with Chromebooks they usually fix themselves.”

Fortunately, the School Board also approved a three-year accidental damage protection plan when they adopted the purchase price according to Jason Olvey, Coweta’s Director of Technology.

“(Chromebooks) require internet access and without it they are worthless,” said Threadgill, making uninterrupted connectivity key and why CEC is grateful to have a wireless upgrade being installed as school ends.

Vaughn did say that textbooks are not without their value. “They are good paper weight, keeps your papers from flying away.”
